Effred gets a raven familiar, but Jeraniel fails his roll. Faffner is
its name.

We buy/make a hand cart to haul the food and tent.

We're ready to go. Sleep fishing as we go.

We find 17 bi-pedal herbivores of a new variety.

December 22, 2185
Biteasaurus appears.  They continue to approach.  Serlisse Faerie
Fires one.  Effred blasts the dune one for 11.  They squawk & bolt. 

December 23, 2185
As we head toward the volcano, we find 4 10ft lizards.  Talarian and
Bruce do a total of 23 damage.  One is dead and one runs away.  A
second one is hit for 14.  Fred hits one with a Web.  Phyllis hits
for 13 the wounded one.  Raybur hits for 4 & I hit for 2 on the
fleeing one.  Talarian hits for 4 with a thrown axe.  Oliver shoots
for 8.  Oliver shoots again for 6.  We set up camp to cook up the
lizards.  We also find a disturbing cave with large bones outside.  A
large beast is snoring inside. 
As we cook, 4 cannibal chickens sneak up on us.  They are the head of
a pack of 22.  Effred & Jer Sleep them and we preserve a jar of eyes
for Faffner.

December 24, 2185
In the middle of the night, a large opposum snuck up and tried to get
into the food.
The metropolis could hold 60,000 people.  The metropolis' towers are
gleaming white teeth.  The metropolis is built on a higher elevation.
 
There is also a city further north.  There is an agricultural area on
the North of the bay.  There is a ruined building in the middle of
the bay.
We send the vultures and the raven to scout the area.
The Metropolis is covered by a white bubble that is cloudy.  It is
clear from a distance, but cloudy up close.  The metropolis is about
two miles by one. 
There is a river in the city area.  There is a white building on the
escarpment in the bay.  It is tall, narrow and white.  It reflects,
which allows us to see it from far away.  The city is about six times
the size of New Teft's original city. 
We partially fortify the tent.
While Serlisse is Magic Pooling on Bubble Town, she is struck blind.
Her eyes detect as magical.

December 25, 2185
Overnight, the building in the center sends a beam of light to sweep
the bay.  We head back to the Temple.

Serlisse's Blindness lifts around midday. 

December 31, 2185
We get back in time for the party.  Fred dances with chicks.  Raybur
has a contest with Meg.  He barely wins.  Brewster challenges Raybur
to another contest and he makes it through three more drinks before
losing it.

We visit Kruklek and talk to the rats.  We find out nothing.

We head back to Base Camp.

We get back to the volcano.

We find about a dozen more Worm Boy traps as we look for the best
route down the North face.

We reach the foot.  We find a field with some grains.  We take some
samples as we go.  We head around the field clockwise and find a huge
track that was left this morning.  Talarian gets grabbed for 21
points of damage and a triple wound.  Talarian hits it for 13.  Fred
hits it for 12 from the circlet.  Jer shoots for 6.  Fred hits it for
8 from Magic Missile.  12 with Severance and 8 from Phyllis.  Conrhia
does 10 more.  Bruce hits for 7 and 2 burn.  Phyllis does 15 more.
Fred hits for 6 and a wound.  Phyllis hits for 15 more and kills it.

Gil lost 3 Dex & 3" & 6#.
We reach the foot.  We find a field with some grains.  We take some
samples as we go.  We head around the field clockwise and find a huge
track that was left this morning.  We are heading in the same vague
direction as it did.  Talarian gets grabbed for 21 points of damage
and a triple wound.  Talarian hits it for 13.  Fred hits it for 12
from the circlet.  Jer shoots for 6.  Fred hits it for 8 from Magic
Missile.  12 with Severance and 8 from Phyllis.  Conrhia does 10
more.  Bruce hits for 7 and 2 burn.  Phyllis does 15 more.  Fred hits
for 6 and a wound.  Phyllis hits for 15 more and kills it. 
[Session 17 start] Gil has been swapped in for Jer. 
We are heading toward the fortification at the mouth of the river. 
We find a lizard man tied onto a post. He was dead for about a week.
Conrhia looks for tracks near the post and gets hit by lightning from
it.  Thunder rolls across the area.  We hide nearby. A human in chain
mail with a composite bow comes sneaking up toward the post.  The
raven was watching.  The human speaks Human.  His name is Leery.  His
party wrecked here from Rebakar (a Realmish port city) about four
months ago.  Ogres in the ruin.  The ogre shaman set up the lizard
man.  We are heading to his hideout in some ruins.  He seems to be a
woodsman-type.  He has a Runic symbol on a seal on his clothes.  It
is a merchants' guild symbol of his employers.  We here Ogre-like
voices behind us.  He has a Bastard Sword.  He has encountered slain
orcs around the city.  The orcs sail in occasionally.  "He has no
magic powers.  He was guard on a boat."
He blasts us with some kind of ice effect.  Talarian & Bruce jump at
him.  Talarian gets Charmed into grappling with Bruce.  Phyllis does
16 points of damage on him.  Leery swings and hits Bruce, dropping
him.  Raybur resists the Charm, but eventually gets Charmed. 
Sputnik, Oliver, Conrhia, Serlisse and Gil are dead.  Four ogres
approach.  Two get Webbed.  Phyllis is a killing machine.  She does
damage the weapon of quality in the process.  Superzilla (Precious)
observes the whole final battle.  Bruce and Talarian survive, but are
1D.

Silver Locket 90gp found by rats

Merchant Co. is negotiating with some dwarves over an ore deposit.
There was a 3k y-o dwarven colony.  The dwarves lost track of the
colony.  Merchant organizes a boat/expedition to find the colony.
Signs on small group of adventurers.  The colony was believed to be
too small to survive.  They were going to recover the treasure.
Leery would get about 25% of the take.  They sailed out thinking
things were looking good.  This happens about 25 yrs ago.  The ship
is boarded by goblins.  A small group fights off the expedition ship
and takes over a goblin attack boat. 20 out of 70 make it. They want
to turn around.  They had the cleric on board. They didn't have the
maps. Devil men board them.  Leery survives since he had been sent to
shore to explore the ruins with three other guys. They went to see if
they could get help.  The boat was attacked while they were gone.
The dinosaurs picked them off.
They had found gates into the dome.  They were open at the time.
They then decide to try to check it out and a couple of them vanish
when they were looking around.  Leery and the other guy decide to
hole up and try to survive.  They know there is a tribe of Ogres in a
huge citadel across a river.  They lasted four months.

We mug the dinosaur.  Mama rips into it.  We score three bow shots

We mug the dinosaur.  Mama rips into it.  We score three bow shots
(Jer, Sputnik (5) & Conrhia (7)).  Ashe does 13 & a wound.
Eventually we polish it off.  The bear got massacred.  We
inside-outed the Ogre Mage by drawing him into the alchemical bottle.
 We then take a nap.  We do a little healing. 
Kleer is tracking trying to find the ogres.  The "city" is not very
interesting.  We find mostly typical ruins.  There are fewer stone
buildings here, but it covers a much larger area than New Teft.  We
find a huge stone bridge crossing the river.  The citadel is still
half a mile away.  The river is of considerable size.  The bridge has
blatantly little cover.  There is no writing on the bridge.  The
bridge is fifteen by one hundred feet.  There is a path that follows
an old stone road.  We decide to set up an ambush to wallop some
ogres as they pass. 
Six ogres appear.  One is actually dressed in good equipment.  He has
chain mail, shield and sword.  Two of the ogres come out of the
cloud.  We pop them.  We then drop the Cloud, kill the non-Entangled
one and then we kill two of the ones on the ground.  When we
interrogate the last one of them, we find out that the Immortal
Mistress lives in the citadel.  She has been around for at least five
generations (so at least 125 years).  Four of the Far-Away Army live
in the citadel.  She might be an Ogre shaman/wizardess.  We killed
her "special servant," who had the dinosaur.  He calls the domed city
the "cursed place of rapid death." 
There are four more in the battle armor.  Huge inky black men are the
makers of the armor (the Far-Away Army).  They might be Fire Giants.
They bring waves of ogres to assault a temple in a huge city to the
west-north-west.  The ogres in the area are the defectors.
She can leave her room, but not the citadel.  Last rainy season, a
special servant visited.  Barna and the ogre mage appear very similar
on the surface.
While we are talking, a cloud of insects attack us.  We rush the
citadel.  When we take 4 points of damage, the insects vanish.  A
voice says, "You've seen my power.  I've seen yours.  Let's parley."
23 creatures face us.  There is an ancient ogress, with boxes for
wands and such.  We talk.  She is a loyal servant of the Lord of
Destruction.  He is the god of ogres and trolls.
The ogre comes with us.  He is called "Third."  He is mildly chaotic
evil. 

April 10, 2186
We get back to camp.  Third is allowed to join the camp to work to
buy the armor.  In the back of temple, they found some more caves.
There is a bubbling pool of acid that looks like blood.  There are
also some springs of water.

We leave the Temple.

April 19, 2186
Back to Summit Camp.

April 20, 2186
We check a number of caves.  We find an ogre skeleton and three
possums.  We also find a ten foot lizard.

April 21, 2186
We head toward the turtle shell.  We head up the river.

April 23, 2186
We set up camp.  Two more biteasauruses attack us. 

April 24, 2186
Find some more surprisasauruses.  We find a stone bridge.  It is
simply constructed.  It looks like a small hamlet.  We decide to
build a small shelter.  The river is about 70 feet wide.  There are
about ten piers under the bridge.  While were are building, we find
some abandoned mine works.

We finish building our shelter.

April 27 and 28, 2186
We search in a one thousand-foot radius.  We think there were about
100 orcs, who left somewhat quickly, taking the easy wealth.  The
mine tailings indicate a mine that employed hundreds of workers.
There are four vertical shafts near the river.  They are all 100 to
120 ft deep.  They are eight feet square.  We find paving stones.  To
the northeast, a couple of hundred years ago, the timber was cut.
There are some roadways heading northeasterly as well.  There is a
pile of rock that is of the same type of stone as the obelisk, but it
is non-magical and worthless now. 
There are also the remnants of an orcish temple.  It seems to have
been destroyed by natural forces, not sentients, who would have
deconsecrated it.  It still detects as low magical.  Ffred finds a
secret panel. 
We find pig iron in three storehouses.  It is rusted, but under the
outer layer is some good iron.  Each of the pigs is worth about
100gp.  There are about 60 pigs. 
At the southern edge of the search, we find a fairly nice statue of
an orcish warrior made of granite.  It is about four feet tall and
there are no inscriptions.  It is non-magical.

April 29, 2186
We are searching the remains of the tavern while waiting.  We
slaughter some cannibal chickens and make chicken and fish stew.  At
dark we find the top of the stairs to the wine cellar. 
First guard watch: Ashe gets attacked by a leaping undead orc.  It
drains Ashe, then Bruce.  Ashe rises as Talarian and Richard crush
the original. 
Before we can do much, Talarian spots two more.  Sputnik holds them
at bay by turning.  Serlisse and Jer Faerie Fire and Levitate the
stronger one.  Sputnik and Conrhia splatter the weaker one.  We all
work together to hammer the strong one.  He has a crossbow with
Lightning Bolt effect that hammers Talarian.  We polish him off.

We rest and Bruce gets back to normal.  (He regained his level.)

May 1, 2186
We hide the panel again and check the cellar.  We find the remnants
of orcs that were consumed a long time ago.  The beverages were also
emptied.  There are three sleeping pallets.  There are four empty
bottles labeled in Dwarvish that indicate a fine grape.  They are
about 800 years old.

The vultures see something on the beach.  It is the sea snake.  We
threaten it and pass by.

We get back to the Temple.

May 12, 2186
We visit the spider sage.  We trade the bottles for identifying the
banded mail armor.  It draws energy from its surroundings.  It is not
aligned and not connected to any other planes.  There were sixteen +1
First Flight and 4 auto-wound and three Lightning Bolt crossbow
bolts.

Kirk finds out that it keeps the wearer comfortable.  It changes the
temperature of the air around the wearer.  The wearer does not need
to go to the bathroom.

Ready to check out the "new" temple at midday.  We find a trick door,
only allowing three of us to get in at a time.  We find the temple
scroll storage room.  There is a statue of a one eyed orc holding a
spear over his head.  He is highly magical.

We finish making our house more defensible. 

June 20, 2186
We talk to Kruklek.  The armor is Power of Mastery.  It seems like it
needs high will power.  It can be bad for bugs and plants when it
uses its temperature effects.  It looks like a space suit.  Talarian
is totally hosed by the armor.  He looks like a lobster when we get
him out of it.  Bruce is able to control it. 
Kruklek suggests, 1) carry a holy symbol of He Who Watches or 2) be
an orc, 3) the temple guardian equipment and /or 4) it is a sensory
guardian, so Invisibility and Silence all on Talarian

We build a dead fall in case the golem comes after us.

Talarian, the orc, goes into the scroll room.  The golem says, "You
serve the Great Master so I serve you, master.  Do you need
protection from invaders?"

We visit Kruklek again and fill him in on the situation.

He clarifies the actual meaning of the golem's words.

We get back and start collecting the scrolls.

July 2, 2186
We get back to Kruklek.  Level 9: Cure Light Wounds x4; Cure Serious
x2; Cure Disease, Neutralize Poison & Remove Curse; Death's Door &
Cure Critical and Hold Person x2.  We give up the Hold Person and
Cure Serious.

BLADES Session #20 Rough Draft

here is a brief Critical Events Summary (all from
memory, so forgive any inaccuracies and report them to me):

We started in early July, 2186. We followed the old trails NE (sort
of along the river) looking for the old smelting site. We found a
rocky "clearing" where the trees were not as thickly grown as
elsewhere. We found an 80 ft pit with murky water in the bottom. We
also found the remnants of a stone building 100'x120'. There are
holes along the walls and a large doorway facing the river. There is
a chimney away from the river and near the pit. The holes are big
enough in some palces for someone to get through. There are also
8-10' "fox holes" all the way around the outer building. They are
about 10' apart. {{{They could have been post holes for an awning
around the building.}}}

We explored the building and found another building inside the first.
This one is made of wood and is taller. The inner building has nice
doors facing the river and the other end is caved in. Neither
Building has much in the way of roofing. We found some large humanoid
bones and the outer doorway is surrounded by skulls of orcs and
lizard men and some ogres.

As we peer into the inner building, we se two piles of dino bones.
There is a path leading between that has been crushed down by a large
biped. We can't tell much else, except it is too narrow for most
quadrupeds. We approach and are surprised by two 5-6' tall bipedal
dinosaurs. They seem to be babies who are now screaming for Mommy.

We take off, figuring retreat is the better part of survival. We run
and before long we hear crashing behind us. We keep running, but the
pursuer gives up. We figure it is at least as big as a biteasaurus.
They are the ones who kept carrying off Oliver.

And Some Thoughts from Dean on Session #20

Raybur kicked some dino-butt last weekend. He used every single spell he
had in the combat and wacked the Deathzillas we fought for some good
damage. He even got munched on and survived.

Edwin granted the fighter multiclass the ability to specialize (w/o speed
adjustments). Raybur is now 4/4 cleric/fighter with double specialization
in longsword (+3/+3).

He now has a Deathzilla tooth to add to his tooth-in-beard collection to
add to his single chickensaur tooth (quite a difference). As a joke, he
even walked back into New Teft with the T-Rex Cuspid hanging from his beard
and tucked into his belt!

Now Phylis can be proud of her cousin (he's not wimpy anymore.)

Also, Where do we go next, Blades Company?

So, is it the ore filled mines (releasing an evil greater than we've ever
fought before?)

Do we take up the journey for the Spears (now that we are 1-2 levels higher
than before)?

Will we finally heed Clear's call to arms against the trolls (giving Raybur
a +4 weapon vs. them)?

Then there is the "breathing cave" (is it living?).

The domed city, perhaps (with its mysteriously disappearing explorers)?

How about the lighthouse top that may be in the water?

After training, I think that we should go see if anything is up at camp
(special missions from Mina). I believe we should also ask the spider sage
about the mines and whether he has information to sell about them (maybe he
knows why they are plugged up). Lastly I believe that we should probably do
the mines or Spears journey next before Clear's adventure.

Joel,

Raybur has an open NWP slot. I was thinking about 1 of 3. Get x2 in
Stonemasonry, x2 in Weaponsmithing or 1 slot in armorer.

Let me know if you have a preference.

The stonemasonry will make him one of the better stonemasons on the island.
Same with the weaponsmithing (income). The armorer slot would give him the
ability to fix part armor if necessary.

Further Adventures

We have established a "settlement" called Asheton in honor of Mark's
Hobgoblin who was drained to unlife. We have a small house/fort built
on the tailings pile of an old iron ore mine. We have minorly
explored the smelting operation and slain two huge dinos that were
living in the buildings' remnants. We were working with Bergan's
dwarven miners to explore the four shafts into the iron mine at
Asheton when another rain storm started and lightning smashed into
the trap we had constructed to reseal the mine when the expected
Balrog tried to kill us for re-opening the mine. We knew something
had plugged the mine from below with high quality ore. The lightning
attack turned out to be a Great/Mountain Giant Druid who doesn't want
civilization on "his" pennisula. The colony worked out a deal that we
would eliminate the other societies and form a "green" colony within
the limited area that we have started to explore and police the rest
of the huge pennisula to maintain the nature preserve without
civilizations. We broke into the mine and found dwarven skeletons
mining the ore and sending it to the opening where the system of
processing had broken down. We decided to turn one of the skeletons
and follow it home, where we found 5 undead. One was a spell caster
and we destroyed all 5 at which point the dwarves collapsed. Most of
the BLADES wanted the skeletons put to rest when they first found out
about them. Only a few were mercenary or uncaring about dwarves and
were willing to allow the skeletons to continue working until a work
force could be found to replace them (when the colony had many more
residents). The list of treasure has been circulated a couple of
times on the list. The ogres and the Invincible Overlord will be
eliminated as part of the agreement. The giant will probably only
live another 50 years or so. There have been several civilizations in
the area. The Fierce ones built the domed cities. The Dwarves
followed, then the Red ones and the Pig people. (I think those are
the names he used.) The red ones are the goblins and pigs are orcs as
far as we can guess. He doesn't know much about the underwater
civilizations.

I think Raybur is 4/4 now.

Fish, Critters, and Law Enforcement

Here is a run down of
the highlights from last game.

We went back to the orkish capital to wait for the Wilbar's Fish and
Critters squad to show up. (Last session we ran around a bit and got
into trouble.) This session we ran around a bit and got into trouble
when a couple of frogs attacked Fred and Talarian while they were
exploring a covered pit that wasn't a pit trap which had two killer
frogs in the bottom. Fred was being pulled out of the pit when
Talarian cut the rope and dropped Fred back into the pit. Talarian
claims that he was trying to slash the frog that was attached to
Fred, but Fred is doubtful. Bruce jumped into the pit to save Fred
and Sputnik was half a beat behind. Bruce landed gracefully. Sputnik
broke his leg. Jer had to Levitate Sputnik out while Bruce tended to
Fred. Sputnik got a disease from the leeches that attached themselves
while he was down. It wasn't pretty.

When WFC arrived, they mostly ignored our Magic Mouths and set some
poisoned fruit traps out. When they found our tracks, they headed
back to their ship. When they headed for the Armorer for the second
time, we ambushed them. Practically everything we threw at them
sloughed right off. We decided retreat was in order. They were
wearing heavy armor, so we eluded them easily enough.

The problems really started when they went to the Armorer and he
chased after us. When he found us, he blasted us with his Cone of
Cold effect. The Armorer is really an ogre mage. Sputnik died
immediately. Several others were in bad shape. The survivors managed
to beat him up enough that he turned Gaseous and fled, leaving us
some magic items, but in the process, Arthur had died from cold
exposure and Bruce had drained himself and died. Messages were sent
to Joreth (the giant) and he came and carried the bodies to New Teft.
Arthur and Sputnik were Raised, but Bruce was not. Bruce's Power of
Mastery Armor and Hand of Blood broad sword were used to pay for the
Raises.

We then invested three months (maybe more or less, depending on
Serlisse's training) to get Sputnik fifth level Cleric, Raybur more
Stonemasonry and several other things that I can't remember without
some sort of notes with me. (I rolled an 8 for HP, I'm up to 29 now!!
maybe now I won't die when I see an Ogre Mage!)

I'm at a loss for ideas of how to get him out of the Tower other than
perhaps doing the faux-logging thing. Of course we wouldn't be able
to actually cut down any trees, so that would make the act a bit
tougher.

And thoughts from Dean on the situation....

The WFC people (at least 3 of them) were high level (10+ estimate) AND well
equiped. The only reason we are alive is because they couldn't keep up with
us. We did a few hp damage via a circulet. No one connected with a weapon
that I can remember. Their retainers where all 1st level crossbow
specialists.

We guess that the armorer just heard that we were really beat up from the
WFC people and came after us while we were down. Little did the armoror
know that we had alot more bite left than a 10+ level guy might have
thought. Besides the sneak attack we did pretty well against him, Phylis
and Raybur and Conrhia did the damage to the orge magi. Talarian was held
(again), Bruce was alive but hurting, Conrhea was hurting. Sputnik and
Arthur were dead, Serlease was 1d maybe or just low on hp. Phylis almost
went down had we not remembered that Conrhea had missed about 4 shots that
we forgot about. In catching her up, we  gased the orge magi barely (just
before the round Phylis would have gone down).

Fish and Critters More Official Summary-Thingie

Not really sure about the two big guys' levels, but they seem to be
well equipped as well. We think that they went to him, since they
were close enough to get to the Tower without problem and it took him
a few minutes to catch us. Raybur has a pretty long way to go to get
to 5th cleric since he is dual classed and 5th cleric is now 22,500
XP.

March 23, 2187
Thirty-four people exit the ship.  There are twelve guards and
nineteen professionals with the two head guys.  They are all loaded
for bear.  They have a tracker.  They open the warehouse and extract
long poles and shovels and they load half on the ship and take half
with them.  They head straight inland.  When they reach the marshy
area, they put three fruit bags in the trees and continue on until
the cross our tracks from the previous day.  Then they turn around
and head back.  We decide to take the fruit and head back to watch
them and spell shift.  The apples are poisoned. 

Twelve armorered men with the two leaders leave and head toward the
Armorer. 

We fire a Silenced arrow in front of them.  The guy in black pulls
out his flaming scimitar.  The big guy puts his shield to cover his
head.  Jer Sleeps five, Serlisse Entangles five.  Raybur‚s Hold
Person fails to have an effect.  They return fire and make me lose my
Hold Person.  Bruce does not get hit.  Bruce‚s Hold Person also has
no effect.  Fred blasts the black armorered guy.  He exits the
Entangle and starts to drink a potion.  Conrhia shoots the remaining
scrub.  Serlisse Faerie Fires the bosses.  Arthur shoots and kills
the last scrub. 

The two big guys keep coming after us, so we run away.  While we are
running a shadowy area is spotted behind us and Talarian gets held,
then a Cone of Cold blasts us.  Sputnik and Jer drop immediately.
Talarian is bleeding to death.  Bruce tries to drain the Armorer, but
fails and eventually dies.
